Mérida has quickly gone from the new kid on the WTA calendar to a WTA 500. Founded in 2023, the tournament has found a rather beautiful setting at the Yucatán Country Club, combining serious tennis with the sunshine, colour and character of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula.

The Yucatán Country Club setting gives the tournament a much more relaxed feel than a huge city arena. I'd look for a lower-level, side-on seat where you can properly watch the players construct points rather than spending the afternoon staring at the back of someone's head. And don't automatically spend the most money on the biggest-name match — at a tournament of this size, getting close to a less-heralded player can be the better experience.

Excellent. This is one of the attractions of a tournament that still feels relatively compact despite its WTA 500 status. The outdoor setup at the Yucatán Country Club means you can follow more than just Centre Court, and I'd particularly target the early rounds when top players are still spread around the tournament rather than all being funnelled towards the business end.

You want good WTA tennis with a Mexican holiday attached. The tournament sits in the Sunshine Swing and has already attracted players such as Jasmine Paolini, Emma Navarro, Katie Boulter and Magda Linette; in 2026, Cristina Bucșa went on to win her first WTA singles title there.

And then there is Mérida itself — colonial architecture, food, culture and the wider Yucatán region on your doorstep. Tennis fans could quite happily build an entire trip around this one.

I'd treat this as a tennis holiday rather than simply a tennis tournament. Arrive early, watch some practice and the outer-court action, then give yourself time to enjoy the tournament surroundings before heading back into Mérida. The early rounds are particularly tempting because the 28-player main draw means plenty of opportunities to see recognisable names without the full Grand Slam circus.

Oh, absolutely. This is proper sunshine tennis. Mérida is warm, bright and considerably less interested in winter than most of Europe, so sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and water are essential tennis equipment. If you have a choice, an evening session is particularly attractive: cooler temperatures, lights coming on and the whole thing feeling rather more glamorous than a February afternoon probably has any right to.

Very good. The Yucatán Country Club is outside central Mérida, so this isn't a tournament I'd plan around walking from your hotel. A taxi or ride-hailing service is the sensible choice, particularly if you're staying in central Mérida and combining the tennis with sightseeing. I'd happily base myself in the city and make the trip to the club part of the day's plan rather than hiring a car purely for the tournament.

You're looking for the intimate, almost club-like experience of a small European 250 where everyone seems to know everyone and you can wander from court to court in five minutes. Mérida is bigger and more polished now that it has moved up to WTA 500 level. And if you don't cope particularly well with heat, humidity and enthusiastic Mexican sunshine, perhaps choose Ostrava instead and bring a coat.
