TENN360 INSIGHT:

Madrid is one of the rare tournaments where both tours come together at Masters 1000 level. The Caja Mágica turns it into a huge tennis playground, with the ATP and WTA playing alongside each other on Madrid's red clay. Add the Spanish sunshine, the city and more than 300,000 spectators a year, and this feels like a proper tennis event rather than simply another stop on the calendar.

Manolo Santana Stadium is the main show court, with a capacity of around 12,500, while Stadium 2 and Stadium 3 offer smaller, closer-to-the-action experiences. I'd choose a side-on seat in Manolo Santana for the big occasion, but don't spend the entire day there — the smaller courts are where you can get much closer to the players.
One useful thing to know: because the ATP and WTA matches run simultaneously, you aren't buying a ticket specifically to watch one tour or one player. The order of play is confirmed the night before.

Very good. The size of the Caja Mágica means players aren't necessarily around every corner, but the practice courts and numerous competition courts give fans plenty of opportunities to watch players away from the main stadiums. With both tours competing, there is also simply a lot more tennis to discover.

You want a full day of tennis choice. This is the big attraction: ATP and WTA matches happening across the same complex, so you can move between men's and women's tennis rather than committing your whole day to one draw. And when you've had enough tennis — if such a thing exists — Madrid is waiting outside.

Give yourself the whole day. Start with the outside courts and practice courts, wander around the site, catch some WTA, some ATP and then settle into one of the main stadiums for the bigger matches. The beauty of a combined event is that your plan will probably go out of the window anyway.

Late April and early May can be beautifully warm and sunny, but Madrid is at altitude and the weather can change. Sunglasses, sunscreen and water are essentials, with a light layer for later in the day.

Excellent. The Caja Mágica is served by Metro Line 3 at San Fermín–Orcasur, with several bus routes nearby. During the tournament, shuttle bus 180 runs between Plaza de Legazpi and the venue from one hour before play until one hour after it finishes, making public transport an easy option.

You prefer a small tournament where everything feels intimate and you can see most of the site in ten minutes. Madrid is big, busy and deliberately spectacular. It can be a lot, but that's also what makes it feel like a Masters 1000.
