TENN360 INSIGHT:

This is American tennis with history. First held in 1910, Houston is the oldest continuously held professional tennis tournament in the United States, and it remains the only ATP Tour event in the country played on clay. The setting at River Oaks Country Club gives it a distinctly traditional, almost old-school tennis feel.

This is where Houston really earns its TENN360 points. Center Court holds only around 3,500 people, so even the bigger matches feel remarkably intimate. I'd take a side-on seat with a clear view of the whole court rather than paying a premium simply to be courtside — at this size, you are already close to the action.

Excellent. The compact River Oaks setting means fans are unusually close to the players, particularly around the practice and outer courts. Early rounds are the sweet spot: fewer crowds, more opportunity to wander and a much better chance of seeing the players preparing away from the main show court.

You like proper tennis history and a tournament with personality. The combination of River Oaks, American clay, a compact stadium and a field of ATP players makes this feel much more like an old-school tennis week than a travelling sports festival. It's also a great place to watch players build towards the European clay season.

Go early and settle into the rhythm of a clay-court day. Watch the outside courts, wander around the River Oaks grounds and then grab a seat for the main match — there is something particularly satisfying about watching a long clay-court rally when you're close enough to hear the players. And don't forget your sunglasses.

Houston in late March/early April can be warm, sunny and humid, but spring weather can also change its mind rather quickly. Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat are sensible, with a light layer or rain jacket worth having nearby. And yes, clay plus Texas sunshine means you may leave looking slightly more athletic than when you arrived.

Very good. River Oaks Country Club is centrally located in Houston, and the tournament provides parking arrangements for spectators. Rideshare is also practical, but I'd avoid making the mistake of treating Houston like a city where everything is five minutes away — distances and traffic can be deceptive. Plan your journey and then forget about the car once you're inside.

You want a giant tournament campus with dozens of courts, shopping villages and constant entertainment. Houston is much more about the tennis itself. And if you are expecting European-style red clay, remember that this is American green clay — a slightly different beast.
