TENN360 INSIGHT:

Buenos Aires is one of those tournaments where the tennis feels deeply connected to the place.

Played on clay at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club, the Argentina Open has a history and atmosphere that make it feel considerably bigger than your average ATP 250.

This is the Cathedral of Argentine tennis.

And the crowd knows it.

Expect passionate support, plenty of local players and a venue where the tennis feels close enough to touch.

Then there's Buenos Aires itself.

Beautiful, chaotic, cultured and very good at staying up late.

You could hardly ask for a better city in which to watch clay-court tennis.

I'd choose a side-on seat as close to the court as possible.

The Guillermo Vilas Court has a relatively intimate feel, with the main court listed at around 4,800 seats, so even seats that aren't courtside can give you a very good view of the action.

Side-on is still my preference.

You see the whole court, the movement and the shape of the rallies much better.

But I'd also make time for the smaller courts.

The joy of a tournament like Buenos Aires is being able to get away from the main stadium and find yourself very close to the players.

And if an Argentine is playing?

Choose your seat carefully.

The atmosphere can become considerably more exciting.

Excellent.

This is one of the reasons I'd choose Buenos Aires over a much larger tournament if player access matters to you.

The venue is compact, with the main court holding only around 4,800 spectators, and the tournament has several courts within the same tennis-club environment.

I'd arrive early and head towards the practice areas.

Then wander.

Watch a smaller match.

Look around between sessions.

The atmosphere inside the club means you feel much closer to the players than you would at a huge Masters event.

And when an Argentine player is practising?

I'd stay.

You might get a rather memorable afternoon out of it.

I'd go if you want a tournament with personality.

This isn't simply an ATP 250 that happens to be in Buenos Aires.

The event is deeply tied to Argentine tennis, and the local support is a huge part of the experience.

I'd also go if you love clay.

The South American Golden Swing gives players a chance to compete on clay in a part of the season when most of the tennis world is elsewhere.

And I'd absolutely go if you're combining tennis with a city break.

Buenos Aires is one of those cities where you can spend the morning watching tennis, have an absurdly good lunch, wander around Palermo and somehow find yourself still out at midnight.

It would be rude not to.

I'd arrive early and don't just head straight for Centre Court.

The Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club has that wonderful old-school tennis-club feeling, and this is a tournament where wandering around is part of the experience.

Find the practice courts.

Watch a doubles match.

Have a look at the smaller courts.

Then settle in for Centre Court when the big match arrives.

And make sure you leave time for the crowd.

Argentine tennis fans can be wonderfully passionate, particularly when a home player is involved.

You haven't really experienced this tournament until you've heard them properly get behind one.

Yes.

This is outdoor clay-court tennis in the Buenos Aires summer, so the sun deserves some respect.

Daytime sessions can be hot, and you'll be spending a lot of time outside.

Bring sunscreen.

Bring sunglasses.

Bring a hat.

And bring water.

If you can choose between a scorching afternoon and an evening session, I'd be tempted by the evening.

The temperature is kinder and the atmosphere has something rather special about it.

Clay, floodlights and an Argentine crowd getting increasingly excited.

What's not to like?

Excellent.

This is another big advantage of Buenos Aires.

The Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club is in Palermo, at Olleros 1510, and is well integrated into the city's transport network. The venue is close to the city's public transport and sits within one of the most accessible parts of Buenos Aires.

I'd use public transport or a taxi/rideshare rather than driving.

Buenos Aires traffic is not something I'd voluntarily add to my tennis day.

And because you're in Palermo, the tennis doesn't have to be the end of the day.

Walk out of the club and you're surrounded by restaurants, bars, parks and the rest of Buenos Aires.

Which means the tennis day can quite easily turn into a Buenos Aires night.

I'd skip it if you're looking for the slick, enormous scale of a Masters 1000.

This is an ATP 250.

The venue is deliberately much more intimate and the tournament is as much about atmosphere as it is about star power.

I'd also skip it if you don't like clay.

There is nowhere to hide from the surface here.

And if you're travelling specifically to see one player, wait for the draw.

Buenos Aires can attract some excellent names, but an entry list is never a promise that everyone will actually walk onto Centre Court.
