There are tennis tournaments, and then there is Monte Carlo. First held in 1897, the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters is played at the Monte-Carlo Country Club, perched above the Mediterranean just outside Monaco. The combination of red clay, sea views and almost ridiculous Riviera scenery makes this one of the most recognisable settings in tennis.

Court Rainier III is the main attraction, with 10,500 seats, but the smaller Court des Princes and Court Elizabeth-Ann de Massy can give you a much more intimate experience. For the main court, I'd go side-on rather than chasing the most expensive seats — the setting does a lot of the work for you.

Excellent. The intimate multi-court layout is one of the tournament's great advantages. There are several competition courts and practice areas, so the opening rounds are ideal for moving around and getting close to the players. If you only sit in the main stadium all day, you're missing part of the point.

You want to experience one of tennis's great rituals. Monte Carlo has history, atmosphere, spectacular surroundings and the first Masters 1000 stop of the European clay season. Even if you aren't a tennis obsessive, it is difficult to imagine many better settings for spending a spring day watching sport.

Don't spend the whole day in Court Rainier III. Arrive early, watch practice, explore the smaller courts and find one of those moments when you look up from the tennis and realise there is a Mediterranean coastline sitting behind it. Then settle in for the big match. Monte Carlo is as much about being there as ticking off a match from your list.

April on the Riviera can be glorious, but don't assume wall-to-wall sunshine. Bring sunscreen and sunglasses for the daytime, with a light layer for the cooler moments and evening. And remember that sitting in the sun overlooking the Mediterranean can be deceptively warm — especially when you're concentrating on tennis.

Excellent. This is one tournament where I'd strongly recommend leaving the car behind. During the event, a temporary Monte-Carlo Country Club train stop operates between Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and Monaco, dropping spectators roughly 500 metres from Entrance 4. Tournament buses in Monaco are also free for spectators, while parking is available with shuttles.

You prefer a huge modern tennis campus where everything is flat, straightforward and easy to navigate. Monte Carlo is beautiful but not particularly interested in making things simple — the venue is built into the hillside, and there are plenty of stairs and changes of level. Comfortable shoes are not optional.
