Finding Life Beyond the Scoreboard: Emma Navarro’s Brave Openness About Health and Healing
Professional tennis tends to measure athletes strictly in numbers: rankings, prize money, unforced errors, and win-loss records. But behind the baseline grind, there are human beings dealing with battles most fans never get to see.
Emma Navarro recently shared a deeply candid look at her health struggles over the past few years, detailing how hidden battles with RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport) and the autoimmune disorder Hashimoto's hypothyroidism left her physically depleted, dizzy, constantly hungry, and battling intense internal frustration.
While outsiders saw a rising star reaching Grand Slam latter stages, Navarro was quietly running on empty and losing a staggering amount of weight.
"Being new to professional tennis, I was doing what my team and I thought was best, and pushing myself to the limit was always my MO," she wrote in a lengthy post on Instagram
Reading her words about feeling "deep internal anger" and constant fatigue is a stark reminder of how much pressure players put on themselves to keep smiling and keep performing, no matter how broken they feel inside.

But her story is ultimately one of immense relief.
As Navarro put it after stepping back to properly heal: "I gained some weight this year. But I also gained my life back."
Over to you: How can professional tennis do a better job of protecting players from burnout and under-fuelling before it reaches a breaking point?
TENN360 Takeaway:
It takes an incredible amount of courage for an elite athlete to step away, admit they are struggling, and prioritise their actual health over a ranking number. Seeing Navarro find her health, energy, and peace of mind again is a massive victory that far outweighs any trophy.
We wish her the absolute best as she takes the time she needs to gear up for next season.
