Strasbourg has been part of the WTA calendar since 1987, originally as a final stop before Roland-Garros, and was elevated to WTA 500 level in 2024. It has managed to keep the feel of a tournament built around the players and the fans rather than becoming a huge tennis machine. And being in Strasbourg, with its mix of French and Alsatian character, gives the tournament a proper sense of place.

The main court is where you'll want to be for the bigger matches, but Strasbourg's relatively compact club setting means you don't necessarily need to be in the most expensive seats to feel close to the action. I'd favour a side-on position with a clear view of the whole court, then spend part of the day moving around the other courts. The smaller-court experience is a big part of the appeal here.

Excellent. The Tennis Club de Strasbourg has the kind of compact layout that works particularly well for fans who enjoy watching players away from the main court. Practice and the smaller competition courts can give you a much closer perspective than you would normally expect at WTA 500 level. The tournament's history and relatively intimate setting have helped preserve that player-to-fan connection even after its elevation from WTA 250 status.

You want a WTA 500 with a more personal feel. Strasbourg gives you high-level women's tennis immediately before Roland-Garros, but without the enormous footprint of Madrid or Rome. And because the tournament is in a real city rather than an isolated tennis resort, you can combine the tennis with food, architecture and a wander around one of France's most distinctive cities.

I'd arrive early and make the most of the tournament atmosphere rather than turning up five minutes before the match you came to see. The Tennis Club de Strasbourg gives you the chance to watch matches on the smaller courts, take in some practice and wander around the fan areas before settling down for your main match. It's also the sort of tournament where a day at the tennis pairs very nicely with exploring Strasbourg itself.

Late May usually means proper spring sunshine is possible, but Strasbourg can still be changeable. Take the usual clay-season essentials — sunglasses, sunscreen and water — but don't assume it will be a cloudless day. A light layer is worth having for the cooler parts of the day.

Excellent. The tournament is easy to reach without a car, with Tram E and electric bus H stopping at Parlement Européen, around 100 metres from the Tennis Club de Strasbourg. That makes it particularly straightforward to combine a day at the tennis with the rest of Strasbourg, rather than treating the tournament as a destination you have to drive to and from.

You want the full mega-event experience, with huge stadiums, dozens of courts and enough entertainment to keep you occupied without ever leaving the tournament grounds. Strasbourg is more intimate and more tennis-focused. Its charm comes from being able to get closer to the tournament, rather than getting lost in it.
