Rouen is one of the newer WTA events, but it has quickly carved out a very clear identity: good women's tennis without the big-event fuss. It moved up from WTA 125 to WTA 250 in 2024 and is played on indoor clay at the Kindarena, making it part of a rather unusual little group of indoor clay tournaments.

The Kindarena is a relatively intimate indoor arena, so you don't need to go mad with the ticket budget to get a good view. Category 1 is the sensible choice for a close look at the court, while Category OR gives you a numbered seat and a little more certainty about where you'll be sitting. And with day tickets starting lower than 20 euros, this is one tournament where you can spend more on the journey than the tennis.

Excellent. Player proximity is one of the tournament's stated priorities, and the compact Kindarena setting makes this much more achievable than at a sprawling WTA 1000. The tournament usually offers combining a day's tennis with an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour.

You want proper WTA tennis without the big-ticket-event price tag. The tournament welcomes more than 20,000 spectators, but the atmosphere remains deliberately convivial and accessible, with the organisers putting player proximity and getting people into women's tennis at the heart of the event.

Go early in the week. The tournament is compact enough to make a full day of it without feeling overwhelmed, and the qualifications are free — an excellent excuse to see the venue, watch players fighting their way into the draw and get properly close to the action. There are also fan activities and a Family Day during the week.

None — you're indoors. Rouen in April can be doing whatever Rouen in April chooses to do outside; inside the Kindarena, it's clay-court tennis without the weather interruptions.

Excellent. The Kindarena is close to central Rouen and well served by public transport. TEOR lines T1, T2 and T3 stop at Mont Riboudet–Kindarena, with several bus routes also serving the area; the venue is also close enough to the city centre and station to make a car unnecessary.

You want a huge tennis village, dozens of courts and the feeling of being lost in a Grand Slam-sized complex. Rouen is much more contained — and that's precisely why it works for fans who prefer being close to the tennis rather than spending half the day walking between courts.
